The Los Angeles Fashion District is getting a new hotel—one with a perfect blend of hipster credibility and old Hollywood provenance.
Ace Hotel, the indie boutique chain based in Portland, Ore., will open in the historic United Artist Theater on Broadway near 9th Street.
The 12-story office building and 1,600-square-foot theater opened in 1927 on a site chosen by Mary Pickford, according to the Los Angeles Historic Theater Foundation. At the time, Pickford was the biggest Hollywood star in the world and one of the founders of United Artists, the first independent film studio, founded in 1919. GARDENA, Calif., Jan 26, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Carroll Shelby Licensing Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Carroll Shelby International Inc. has issued a statement concerning the settlement agreement reached with the company formerly named Shelby Supercars LLC, and its owner, Jerod Shelby, requiring that no commercial use be made of the "Shelby(R)" trademark owned by Carroll Shelby. As part of the agreement, Jerod Shelby's company has also issued its own statement announcing "a new corporate identity strategy which more clearly identifies itself" by changing its name to "SSC North America."

It has been immortalized by Bobby Triupe, Will Rodgers, Charles Kuralt, and John Steinbeck. For some it represents the best of our society and for others it is a painful reminder of a lost past and sense of community.
